Head of Software
The role covers all aspect of leadership of the Software function, consisting of 5 teams, ~80 permanent staff, 3 UK sites and a number of contract staff - the Software function is responsible for:
* Creating new products & platforms
* Enhancing and maintaining current ones
* Supporting customers
* Sales and manufacturing deliveries to end-users
The main responsibilities and tasks are:
* Leading and shaping of the software organisation for current and future products
* Timely delivery of finished, high quality, and compelling software products
* Managing software engineering schedules, resource allocations and budget. This includes 3rd party vendors, and outsourced development
* Driving the overall architecture, security and certifications of software products
* Building and leading engineering groups, contractors and 3rd party vendor development projects
* Working closely with fellow development heads and the management team to define product direction. This includes in-depth engineering analysis of product's software
* Ensuring, and creating as needed, software engineering processes, practices and operations for reproducible development and high standards of quality, while keeping costs under control
* Working closely with product managers to ensure development meets or exceeds customer requirements, including ensuring that product designs are well documented and communicated
* Monitoring technology trends such as emerging standards for new technology opportunities
Personal attributes and experience :
* Ability to lead from the front and drive systematic improvements, change and excellence across the software organisation
* Passion and ability to evangelise about development of embedded software, tools and systems
* The drive and tenacity to resolve technical issues on a projects to ensure deadlines are met
* Ability to inspire and motivate employees and partners with a compelling vision of how software should be created
* Excellent analytical, numerical, written and verbal communications skills
* Line management experience of teams of >20 staff
* Ability to consider issues from customer and product user perspectives
* Ability to work to a high level of quality and detail, having understood the "big picture"
* Can do attitude, robust and able to cope with a broad based and demanding brief
Technical skills and experience (essential):
* Comprehensive knowledge of embedded C programming in a wireless telecom environment
* Detailed knowledge and proven experience of the full lifecycle of software development
* Coordination and staffing of teams across multiple software projects in a matrix environment
* Substantial experience in some of the following areas with knowledge of the remainder:
1. User-interface software environments & principles, middleware (WAP, TCPIP etc)
2. Device frameworks and drivers
3. Protocol stack architecture, design and implementation
4. DSP algorithms, control code and audio systems
5. Windows and Linux desktop software development experience
* Software project management
* Good degree in computing, engineering or related physical sciences
Technical skills and experience (desirable):
o Recent hands-on programming experience
o Exposure to object orientated methodologies e.g. UML
o Advanced academic or professional qualification (e.g. Masters or PhD)
